One size doesn’t fit all with eczema
One of the most common things we, as humans, do when we have an ailment is talk to other people about it and find what worked for them.
Out of the goodness of their hearts, they are going to give your their recipes, their treatment plans, the supplements their doctor / specialist / naturopath recommended.
BUT…. one size does not fit all with eczema.
What worked for them won’t necessarily work for you (or your child).
Here’s why:
Eczema isn’t just a single condition.
I know. That’s confusing. Itch is itch, right? Nope. Eczema is actually a REACTION. It’s your skin responding to some internal dysfunction, inflammation or irritation. And that can be different for everyone. So the same symptom can come from a multitude of different causes which, in turn, require different approaches to treatment.
You are unique. And so is your microbiome.
Like your fingerprints which are uniquely you, your microbiome is the same.
No two people have the exact same microbiome and gut bacteria population. The distribution of bacteria types are different, the amount is different and the things over the years that have impacted are vastly different.
So the same foods, creams, supplements and approaches to treating eczema can have two very different effects and results in people.
Your immune system has it’s own story.
How you were born, your health history, whether you were breastfed or not, the antibiotics you may or may not have taken, your illness history, your intake of toxins…these are all unique to your story. And that means your immune system has been shaped, tested, moulded, challenged and created in a way that is 100% you. This shapes the specific way that your immune system responds to threats and challenges, including the dysfunctions that may lead to eczema as a symptom.
Your triggers are your own.
We all respond differently to stress. We all process change differently. And, in the same way, what tips one person over the edge can be vastly different to another even if the symptoms or outcomes are the same.
Food intolerances, stress levels and tolerances, environmental factors and even hormone levels all play a role as a trigger, but are all different for each of us. So what worked for your sister, or perhaps your brothers kids, may not work for you or your kids. Generic protocols are rarely the answer.
So what can you do then?
It’s about understanding your personal triggers, situation, gut health and immune system. Use your specific symptoms to help you get personalised care. Keep note of what you have tried, what worked and not, what triggers it, how you feel, whether its specific times of the month even that your symptoms appear.
And then, find a practitioner that can help. Naturopaths are situated to understand how important personalised care and treatment plans are, and can help you interpret the signs so you can reach the underlying causes quicker and with lasting results.
