Natural Eczema Treatment: Allergies and Intolerances
What if I told you, it was possible to find out which foods and environmental triggers were contributing to your child’s eczema flares, and then we could easily and gently reduce that reactivity without the need for the constant trial and error, restriction, or invasive procedures??
If you’re a parent of a child with eczema, you’ll know how exhausting it can be trying to work out which foods or environmental triggers might be causing flares. Cutting things out, changing products, reintroducing foods — only to have another flare-up just when you think you're getting somewhere.
I see this all the time in my clinic. It’s confusing, stressful, and can take a huge emotional toll on the whole family. Mealtimes feel like a minefield, your brain’s in overdrive, and even then, the skin often never fully clears.
You just want to help your child feel better — but with so many possible triggers (and plenty of conflicting advice out there), it’s hard to know where to begin, or when to stop.
The Problem with Elimination Diets
From a naturopathic perspective, I approach eczema and allergy sensitivities a little differently. While food can absolutely play a role, long and complicated elimination diets aren’t always the answer — especially for young children and breastfeeding mums who need nourishment to grow and heal.
Endless food eliminations can easily create nutrient deficiencies, picky eating habits, and a huge mental and emotional load for families. And even with all that effort, many parents tell me the eczema doesn’t really improve much — or only temporarily.
Often, the question isn’t which foods to cut out, but why the body is reacting to foods in the first place.
That’s where my focus lies: calming the immune system, supporting gut and skin health, and building resilience so that foods become far less triggering and mealtimes can feel calm again.
The Underlying Factors
There’s rarely one single cause. Instead, we often see a mix of things contributing to eczema and food sensitivities, like:
Early gut colonisation issues (C-section birth, antibiotics)
Nutrient deficiencies (zinc, vitamin D, fatty acids)
Microbiome imbalances
High sugar and processed diets
Sleep disruption and immune stress
While conventional approaches often focus on avoidance, my goal is to support the body itself — helping it become stronger, less reactive, and better able to tolerate everyday foods and environmental exposures.
Identifying and addressing these underlying factors is essential for long-term relief and optimal health going forward, but in cases where there seem to be so many restrictions and sensitivities, how do we ease that burden in the meantime??
This is Where I Use Positive Association Technique (PAT) in My Clinic
This is where I bring in a therapy called Positive Association Technique (PAT). It’s one of the tools I use to help both my eczema clients and allergy families reduce sensitivities gently, without long-term restriction.
Using gentle muscle testing (which works for children of any age — even babies), I’m able to identify foods and environmental triggers that may be contributing to flares, including sensitivities that often don’t show up on conventional skin prick or IgE testing.
From there, we use a chiropractic tool called an Acustim to help recalibrate the body’s response and reduce the over-reactivity. Over time, this can help bring back more freedom with food, reduce flare frequency, and give the body space to heal properly.
Nourishment Over Restriction
As both a naturopath and a mum who’s walked this road personally, my priority is always to make the process feel gentler and less stressful — not just for the child, but for the whole family. Long-term healing happens when we focus on nourishment, repair, and building resilience.
When we take this kind of whole-body approach, children can tolerate a wider variety of foods, sleep better, itch less, and enjoy life with far less stress around what’s safe to eat.
If you’ve been stuck in the frustrating cycle of elimination, flares and second-guessing — there is another way forward.
